Florida Keys arrival playbook

Fly to EYW or arrive through South Florida?

Compare the full route—not just the airfare—before choosing how to reach Key West or another part of the Florida Keys.

Quick answer

Direct arrival at EYW usually removes the long road segment and can protect usable time on a short Key West stay. South Florida can still win when the airfare or schedule is materially better, Miami is part of the trip, or several travelers can share the vehicle cost. Compare door-to-door time and every ground category before deciding.

Research record

Desk-researched and editorially compared August 26, 2026 using Key West International Airport ground-transportation guidance, current provider information, route decision factors, and the source links below. The desk did not represent either route as personally taken.

Build the comparison from your front door

Price airfare, baggage, airport wait, rental car or transfer, fuel, tolls, parking, and the value of the travel day. A lower fare into Miami or Fort Lauderdale can stop being cheaper after the complete final leg is included. A direct EYW ticket can be worth more than its airfare difference when it preserves most of an arrival or departure day.

Option 1: fly directly to Key West

Direct arrival can simplify a short stay by removing the long South Florida drive. Compare the flight schedule, connection, baggage allowance, and total itinerary. Key West International Airport says permitted ground transportation serves the airport and that taxis, vehicles for hire, shuttles, and courtesy vehicles must maintain an active airport permit.

Do not assume a rental car is necessary after arrival. Many visitors spend most of their time in compact parts of Key West. Compare lodging parking and planned trips outside the center with taxi, ride, shuttle, bike, or other current local options. The arrival vehicle and the island vehicle can be separate decisions.

Option 2: fly to South Florida and drive or transfer

This route can work when the flight schedule is substantially better, the drive is part of the experience, or several travelers can share a vehicle. Add rental taxes, fuel, tolls, one-way charges, parking, and enough energy for the road segment. Avoid building a tight departing-flight connection immediately after a long drive off the Keys.

If the destination is Key Largo or another Upper Keys location rather than Key West, compare Miami and Fort Lauderdale first. EYW sits at the opposite end of the island chain, so a flight into Key West can create a long reverse ground trip. Use the exact lodging address in the route comparison.

Option 3: make Miami and Key West one deliberate trip

A two-destination trip can justify the longer route. Treat the Miami nights, vehicle pickup, Overseas Highway day, and Key West arrival as real itinerary blocks—not hidden friction. If Miami activities are part of the plan, compare them separately through Miami’s Best Tours.

How early should you get to Key West airport?

Use the airline’s current check-in and baggage deadline, the airport’s current security guidance, your parking or vehicle-return plan, and the scheduled departure—not a universal internet rule. Build backward from the strictest deadline. Add more margin when returning a rental car, checking bags, traveling at a busy period, or connecting onward. Recheck flight and security conditions on the travel day.
